On this morning, our little one pushed our tree chair—his father once carved from a stump—up to the kitchen table. This is the special place he found to sit and eat his bowl of dark cherry oatmeal.
Cherries, sweet and dark. In oatmeal, they make good-for-your-heart oats taste so good too. Our little diners always request sweet dark cherries in their morning warm cereal. Frozen cherries quickly cool steaming cereal down for eager bellies; and, the cherries warm to sweet, juicy, dark deliciousness.

Place 2 cups rolled oats and 4 cups milk, soymilk or almond milk in saucepan. Cook over medium-low heat until thick, stirring often. About 15 minutes. Scoop into bowls. Add cherries and gently stir for just a moment. Serves 4.
In our home, the deep dark cherries are enough enticement for the children to delve into their bowl of oats — and finish them. But, here are fun-for-kids add-ins that complement dark cherry oatmeal the 2nd...or 22nd time you make it:
Swirl of maple syrup* or honey, spoonful of dark chocolate chips, homemade maple butter*, sprinkle of shredded coconut, teaspoon of vanilla extract, and chopped almonds or walnuts.
