Our 6-year-old has strung one of our popcorn balls onto red thread. She wants to share with some snow-weather bird friends. A winter treat for the birds. Leaning out the open window into the cold winter air, she and her little brother wait patiently, and sort-of quietly, for a feathered fly-in.
Our daughter began her bird-treat-making with a simple string of popcorn. I helped her tie a button on the thread to keep the popped kernels from sliding off the end. She quietly, tranquilly and so patiently sewed the popcorn onto the thread herself. Afterwards, she wanted to make a treat we could eat; so we made the popcorn balls. recipes for the birds
It was simply sweet of our daughter to want to leave the birds a treat. I wanted to encourage her thoughtful benevolence to hungry winter birds. Plain popcorn, free of salt and artificial flavors or colors, is fine to feed to wild birds (source: Yahoo! Answers). So, our 6-year-old's all-natural popcorn creations were indeed bird-friendly.
