Our Easter decorations are an assemblage of our children's own handmade contributions, gifts, vintage Easter postcards, and Easter treasures from my own childhood.
Our little one gazes at the beautiful things pulled from our box of Easter decorations. Close quiet observation of a miniature egg and chick and peels of laughter at a silly, fuzzy wind-up pair stumbling about. He and his sister both wear matching marker mischief—he on his green colored temple (top photo) and she on her arm (below right).
I first noticed through the lens here. I was going to capture only the hand letter-pressed bunny card on the floor, but I zoomed out for a most-intriguing look. Our 6-year-old is only wearing one sock. And it's mine. The other is still missing...what could she have been up to the moment the sock disappeared? I asked her. She doesn't know. She's 6, remember. And, that is also why she is standing on the piano bench—so her small, 6-year-old arms may reach the top of the piano, where she will place Easter decorations.
So many smiles—and so many Easter surprises. In the flurry of the children's excited hurry, the photos are a bit blurry—
But, aren't lovely childhood memories a blur of wonderful-ness anyway?
A simple Easter basket made with a plain white paper cup and pretty ribbon tied through the sides, above. Inside, small treasures nest in bright tissue paper.
how to create lasting memories of Easter with children
1 Share stories of your own childhood Easter memories. 2 Tell the children about their first Easter holidays, the ones before they can remember. 3 Create new Easter family traditions like our coat tradition. 4 Follow established traditions, like decorating eggs before Easter, Easter egg hunts, or baking Easter breads like hot cross buns or breads adorned with decorated eggs. 5 Explain the historical and religious reasons why Easter is celebrated. 6 Include the children in the holiday preparations—decorating, cookie baking, helping with the family meal. 7 Have the children create their own decorations or drawings for the holiday. 8 Take photos to share with the children in coming Easter celebrations. 9 Remember to smile, listen, hug, enjoy, slow-down, savor, and laugh this Easter—and ever after. ©heather cahoon • wordplayhouse®
