Few things bring a family together more, than chocolate and marshmallows moosh-ed into a sweet sandwich. Sitting around talking, wow-ing together as a family over some amazing facts and photos in the book The Elements: A Visual Exploration of Every Known Atom in the Universe (Amazon Affiliate link). Gathered around our majestic outdoor fireplace on the deck. Tending to some golden marshmallows, roasting on the neat points of tender branches that our oldest has just whittled the ends of to. There are some laughs, some quietness, some running around, some sitting...enjoying each other, enjoying our s'mores.
To me a s'more is synonymous with summertime. With camping. With childhood. Of course I know what a s'more is—just as sure as I know what a hand, or an apple is. So, I was so surprised once when I found that my friend, from another country, didn't know what one was. I discovered this favorite treat of campers is mainly enjoyed in North America. So, if you have never heard of or have never tried s'mores (or if you want to know how to make a perfectly melty one), here is how to make a s'more:
s'mores
graham crackers* (find our fun shaped graham cracker recipe here)!
marshmallows
chocolate
campfire
Find sticks about the length of your arm. Put a piece of chocolate on a graham cracker. Roast your marshmallow over the campfire until it is golden brown. While it is still hot, and still on your stick, place the marshmallow onto your waiting graham with the chocolate. Place another graham cracker on top. Now, gently press the top graham down onto your sandwiched chocolate and marshmallow while you slide your stick out. The hot marshmallow will make your chocolate nice and soft, and all the flavors of your sweet sandwich will meld together...in your mouth, on your face, in your hair and on your hands! These are wonderfully messy!
*We used our favorite round, whole grain graham cookies, but graham crackers in America are typically rectangle shaped. They are easily broken into two equal square crackers and two of these halves are used for one s'more sandwich. ©heather cahoon • wordplayhouse®
