The books. They were the highlight of the evening, along with the fireflies and the blazing sunset. We read together early in the evening, in the shade of the tent. When darkness came, the younger ones and I left our oldest adventurer to bare the elements (it was a mild, pleasant evening) and strike off on her own (imagined) endangering endeavors—with her stack of books. She selected the books herself from her shelves in her room. I didn't realize, until the backyard campsite was being put away the next day, that she had a theme to what she had carefully chosen. Survival, scout, and outdoor books. Perfect reference reading for a child sleeping out under the stars on her own. Her chosen books were a reading list worthy of sharing. Perfect summer reading for young naturalists and outdoor enthusiasts.
