Handmade patterns are easier for beginning sewers and for teaching sewing to children—why you will prefer handmade patterns over the ones your mother used. And, a few of our very favorites. At a toddling age, I was familiar with the hum of my mother's sewing machine and our floor spread with fabric, and tea-colored tissue patterns. With her help, navigating the confounding lines and symbols on those patterns, I sewed my first garment as a child. Now that we have children who sew, I have happened upon the most joyful alternative to those typical, confusing tissue patterns—I have discovered handmade patterns. Handmade pattern directions are simple and clear. And, many come with photo or illustrated tutorials—making sewing less daunting, and more merry, for a child learning to sew. Or, for a grown-up wanting to too.
